Software Activation Code Safely

An activation code unlocks paid software or a game. Buy it from the publisher or an authorized store.

Updated . Edited by: Ilyass Ben Hakim.

Where to buy

The safest source is the publisher's own store. Large retailers sell digital codes too. Check that the retailer itself is the seller, not a marketplace partner.

Professional insight

IT buyers check license type and region before price. A cheap key with the wrong license can fail later.

  • Retail licenses usually transfer; OEM licenses stay with one PC.
  • Region locked codes may not redeem in your country.
  • Volume license keys are not meant for resale.
  • Keep the receipt; publishers ask for proof of purchase.

Red flags

  • Lifetime keys priced at a small fraction of retail.
  • Codes sent as a photo or by private message.
  • Sellers asking you to use a VPN to activate.
  • Volume, MAK or OEM keys sold on their own.
  • Instructions to run a script or crack tool.
