CV Joints and CV Axles

Auto parts stores sell CV joints and full axles. Match by vehicle, side and drivetrain.

Updated . Edited by: Ilyass Ben Hakim.

Where to buy

Local parts stores, dealer parts counters and online parts sites sell them. Most shops replace the whole axle rather than one joint.

Professional insight

Mechanics usually fit a complete axle. Rebuilding one joint takes longer and saves little.

  • Confirm left or right, and front or rear.
  • Count spline teeth on the old shaft.
  • Check for an ABS tone ring on the outer joint.
  • Use the new axle nut, never the old one.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Clicking when turning at low speed.
  • Clunk when shifting into drive or accelerating.
  • Vibration that grows with speed.
  • Grease sprayed inside the wheel from a torn boot.

Repair or replace?

A torn boot caught early may only need a boot kit. A clicking joint is already worn, so replace the axle.

Tools you will need

  • Jack and rated jack stands.
  • Large axle nut socket and breaker bar.
  • Torque wrench for the axle nut spec.
  • Pry bar to pop the inner joint out.
  • Drain pan for gearbox fluid.

Common questions

Are remanufactured axles worth it?
They can be. Check the warranty and that both joints were rebuilt.
Should I replace both sides?
Not always. Replace the side that is worn, and inspect the other.
What is a CV boot?
A rubber cover that keeps grease in and dirt out.
