Rare and Out of Print Music CDs

Rare CDs include out-of-print albums, early pressings and limited editions. Here is how to buy them safely.

Updated . Edited by: Ilyass Ben Hakim.

Where to buy

Search by artist, album and catalog number, not just the title. Record stores, CD fairs and estate sales also turn up rare discs.

Professional insight

Collectors buy a specific pressing, not an album. Catalog number and matrix code decide value.

  • Read the matrix code etched on the inner ring.
  • Early pressings often list a different country of manufacture.
  • Missing obi strips cut value on Japanese releases.
  • Hold the disc to light to check for pinholes.

Red flags

  • Disc shows a purple or green dye side, like a CD-R.
  • Printing on the booklet looks blurry or pixelated.
  • Stock photos instead of photos of the actual copy.
  • Catalog number missing or different from known releases.
  • Seller will not show the matrix code.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Pinholes of light through the label side.
  • Brown or coffee-colored stains in the shiny layer.
  • Skips, dropouts or tracks that will not load.
  • Peeling or flaking on the label side.

Storage

  • Keep discs in their cases, standing upright.
  • Store away from heat, damp and direct sun.
  • Handle discs only by the edge and center hole.
  • Replace cracked jewel cases but keep original inserts.

Questions for the seller

  • What is the matrix code on the inner ring?
  • Has the disc been play tested start to finish?
  • Are the booklet and inserts original to this copy?
  • How will it be packed for shipping?
