Hardware stores carry small consumer rolls. Industrial suppliers and electronics distributors sell full width rolls by part number.

Fabricators choose VHB by substrate surface energy first. Thickness comes next, to fill gaps.

Powder coat and plastics often need the 5952 family.
Clear 4910 suits glass and clear acrylic joints.
Full bond strength builds over about 72 hours.

Check the label

3M and VHB marks with a four digit product number.
Thickness in mil or mm, such as 40 mil or 45 mil.
Width and roll length match your job.
Color: clear, white, gray or black.

How to use it

1Clean both surfaces with a 50:50 isopropyl alcohol and water mix.
2Let the surfaces dry fully.
3Apply tape above about 60 F (15 C).
4Press firmly along the whole strip.
5Wait before loading the joint fully.

Red flags

Generic foam tape sold under the VHB name.
No 3M logo printed on the liner.
Product number missing from the listing.
Very cheap long rolls from unknown sellers.

Common questions

Can VHB tape be removed?: Yes, but slowly. Use fishing line or a plastic wedge, then adhesive remover.
Does it work outdoors?: Most VHB tapes resist UV and water. Check the data sheet for your series.
Is Scotch heavy duty mounting tape the same?: Some consumer packs use VHB. Check for the VHB mark on the pack.
