VP Racing Fuel Jugs

VP Racing jugs are 5.5 gallon motorsport containers. Hardware and race parts stores sell them.

Updated . Edited by: Ilyass Ben Hakim.

Where to buy

Race parts shops, hardware chains and powersports dealers stock them. Some sellers will not ship them to California.

Professional insight

Race crews color code jugs by fuel type. They buy hose and vent kits together.

  • Extra half gallon allows for fuel expansion in heat.
  • Square jugs stack tighter in a trailer than round.
  • Confirm the cap, vent and hose fit your jug.
  • Check local rules before carrying fuel on roads.

Color options

Red, yellow, blue, black, white and themed prints.

Safe use

  • Fill on the ground, never in a truck bed.
  • Leave head space and keep the cap tight.
  • Store away from heat, sparks and living spaces.
  • Label each jug with the fuel inside.
  • Never mix fuels in one jug without cleaning it.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Cracks, splits or wet seams.
  • Swollen or soft walls.
  • A cap that will not seal.
  • Fuel smell when the jug is closed.

Common questions

Why 5.5 gallons and not 5?
The extra space lets race fuel expand on hot days without overflowing.
Can I use it as a regular gas can?
VP says it is not a portable fuel container under EPA rules.
Why can't it ship to California?
It does not meet CARB gas can rules. Some sellers block that state.
