Professional insight
Natural dyers buy woad by pigment form and indigotin content. Fresh leaves and dried powder behave very differently.
- Ask whether the powder is extracted pigment or ground leaf.
- Ground dried leaf gives far weaker blues.
- Woad needs a reduction vat, not simmering.
- Protein fibres such as wool take woad well.

Common questions
- Is woad the same as indigo?
- They give the same blue pigment but come from different plants.
- Can I dye cotton with woad?
- Yes, but plant fibres usually need more dips than wool.
- Is woad body paint safe?
- Only use cosmetic products made for skin. Dye vat chemicals are not skin safe.
