Zen Garden Gravel for Raking

Zen garden gravel is small, plain stone that holds raked lines. Granite chips and fine pea gravel are the usual choices.

Where to buy

Landscape supply yards sell gravel by the ton for full gardens. That is usually cheaper than bagged stone.

Home improvement stores stock bagged pea gravel and granite chips. Online bags suit small or desktop gardens.

Professional insight

Japanese garden builders pick angular granite in one color and size. Then they test rake a sample.

  • Angular chips hold rake lines better than round pebbles.
  • Washed stone avoids dust that clouds after rain.
  • Mixed sizes separate when raked, so avoid them.
  • See a wet sample, since color darkens when damp.

  • Re-rake after heavy rain or wind.
  • Top up each year as gravel settles into the base.
  • Pull weeds while small so roots do not spread.

Common questions

Can I use play sand instead of gravel?
Outdoors, sand blows away and turns muddy. It works only in covered desktop trays.
Should zen garden gravel be white?
Not always. Grey granite is traditional. Avoid bright dyed stone.
Do I need a membrane under the gravel?
It is strongly advised. It slows weeds and stops stone sinking into soil.
